BUSINESS BUILDING MYTH # 7: I WON’T NEED MUCH STARTUP CAPITAL

Yikes. It is too easy to underestimate the funds needed to start a business! Startup capital refers to the funds covering business expenses and your minimum survival mode salary until your business pays you an adequate salary.

Naturally, most new coaches have a very limited period during which they better get their coaching practice up and earning fast, or they will run out of money to fund themselves and their project. This is commonly referred to as bootstrapping.

Sadly, most new coaches underestimate how long it will take to get adequate funds pouring into their business. Many have to abandon their coaching dreams because they didn’t have adequate startup capital to give themselves a fighting chance.

I want to share my own story here, just so you know you aren’t alone.

MY PERSONAL STARTUP FUNDS STORY
One chilly Thanksgiving evening in Killington, Vermont, an unnecessarily pesky phone call from an IBM team member proved to be the last straw. The one that broke the camel’s back. It was from a colleague on a big project I was working on. I decided as I hung up that call, that I would resign from my cushy, comfortable corporate job with a fat corporate salary.

I announced to my husband the next morning that it was not negotiable. I was leaving! I was to become a coach. And I would borrow $50,000 from my own retirement to start my business. I promised I would pay it back within two years, and announced he wasn’t to say anything. He sweetly didn’t resist too much (he’d lived with me while I endured the increasingly toxic corporate job. Pretty sure I wasn’t fun to live with).

Well, I must confess as I look back now with the benefit of hindsight, I wasted most of that $50,000. I had never run a coaching business before. I did all the wrong things. I started out as a life coach. (Guilty secret: I have to confess I never could figure out how to make that work!) I bought too many self-study classes that were never going to help me. With wonder and excitement, I listened to free webinars on 30 hot topics that guaranteed my success and bought lots of things that didn’t help me. I got some expensive certifications I probably never needed. I designed a whole website, and paid $3,000 for it, that was totally wrong (I hadn’t settled on my niche yet, so it was aimed at the wrong target market).

In particular, I had no idea how to find clients, and I tried so many sales techniques and marketing methods. Most cost a fortune and didn’t work for me at all. Don’t even ask me how much money I wasted on a Google AdWords experiment in the days when I had no clue how to use them! Newspaper ads, too! Jeez.

I finally figured it all out. I was one of the lucky ones. I was making over $10,000 per month by the end of Month 8. Making mistakes and failing frequently are excellent teachers!

Here is my confession: it was the end of Year 3 before I could declare a personal income (not revenue, actual taxable income to me the hard-working owner) of $150,000. That was equal to the corporate salary that I left. At the time, my revenue was around $360,000. I had no idea of the gap between revenue and income!

Here’s the lesson: I was one of the lucky ones. My husband could support our living expenses while I got my business going. It took me many months to start making real money and years to take out significant owner’s drawings that I could easily live off.

Yet time and time again, I see fearful business coaches, with no support, that HAVE to get clients by the end of the month. What a highly stressful and highly unlikely way to build a business.

There is SOOOOO much hype on making six figures in a month or a year or whatever. I know you have seen it. I am sure a few people have achieved this income, but it is highly atypical. The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which studies entrepreneurship, found that 90 percent of USA entrepreneurs do NOT make $100,000 per year of revenue. That is a fact.

So, some practical advice for getting startup capital:

Fear, starvation and desperation will not attract clients and do not build the sort of business you desire.
Get funding support, whether it’s a small business loan or from a personal savings or checking account.
Get enough funding to give yourself a sporting chance. Remember, it can take years to grow your revenue to the point you can support yourself.
We believe a financial cushion of at least six months, and preferably 12 months, is
If you really can’t get yourself this financial cushion to get your coaching practice going, don’t quit your day job just yet. Start your coaching practice after hours or part time, and quit once you have figured out how to get clients regularly.

Lord Alan Sugar created a one-of-a-kind contest for his followers. He asked them to predict when he would reach the 2 million followers milestone. The lucky winner got a signed copy of Lord Alan Sugar’s book.


You can also opt for rewarding the fastest answer, the one who tags his friends to share the prize. You can create caption contests where you post a photo, and the best caption for it wins.


These types of contests are universal, so you can easily translate them to your own coaching business. What will the prize be, you might ask? You can give away a coaching session or a piece of content. I’s a great way to make your business visible on Twitter: make people compete for it. When you get more people learn about coaching, or even try it, they will share their impressions and spread the message.


CONCLUSION

Using social media, especially Twitter, to increase your business audience can have a dramatic impact on your business. It can increase your revenue, and it’ll take your coaching business to a whole new level. In order to increase your audience, you should know its behavior and everything there is to know about them.


Once you know that, you should engage with them when they are active. You should use different contests and social trends to improve your visibility. By using these tips when creating your social media campaign, you shouldn’t have any trouble in increasing your business audience.

GETTING OUT OF THE CHAIR

Most traditional office environments revolve around a seated, desk-based approach to work. The same is true of coaching. As an executive and life coach, experience has shown that getting out of the chair to move beyond just sitting and talking can be incredibly powerful. Here are three reasons that explain why:


MOVEMENT AS A CATALYST

The very act of simply getting out of the chair to move or walk around can help your client unlock a fresh perspective. Research in neuroscience is increasingly making connections between physical movement and creative thinking. And, cognitive scientists have recently uncovered that cognition is also embodied―meaning we think with both our brains and our bodies.


By supporting coachees to become more tuned into their bodies through movement during a session, we are allowing them to access more creative and resourceful aspects within themselves.


BREAKING THE MOLD

standing and talkingThere is a danger that one dimensional coaching while being seated can sometimes become too serious and earnest. This is particularly true if your client’s day-to-day way of operating involves a traditional office environment.


By getting out of the chair, you can help break this mold and offer something different that rejuvenates the client. People often seek coaches when they are stuck. And, stuckness is usually the result of difficulties in recognizing and breaking recurring thought/behavior patterns.


By inviting the client into a different physical frame, we are offering them an alternative to their habitual comfort zone–this is a useful coaching intervention in and of itself. We are creating the environment for something potentially new and different to emerge.


NOT “INTERVIEWING” THE CLIENT

Coaching can sometimes make the client feel like they are in the ”hot seat” or having an interview. On occasions, creating a safe and non-judgmental space might not be enough to ease such feelings. If you sense this as a coach, getting out of the chair is great way to break any physical associations to an interview setting.


There might also be a tendency with some clients to view the coach as the ”one with the


knowledge/answers.” I find that getting out of the chair to move around during the session helps the coaching relationship to develop more quickly into a true partnership. A partnership, where the coachee feels firmly in the driver’s seat.


FINAL THOUGHTS

Getting out of the chair is not about completely replacing being seated during coaching with walking or standing (though that is certainly an option based on the preferences of the coach/client). It is more about recognizing the positive impact that this can have in supporting the coachee to unlock a new perspective.


So, the next time you feel like you are going around and around in circles with your client or that energy levels are beginning to drop, it might be time to introduce some movement into the session!

MY 3-STEP CLIENT ACQUISITION PLAN

As a coach and speaker who travels the country for a living, I’m often asked what’s the best way to generate new coaching clients.


Because truth be told: Being a coach isn’t easy.


There are literally thousands of people out there saying they can perform a very similar service to yours. So, the question becomes, “How can you ethically market yourself in a way that differentiates yourself from others, while generating more coaching clients?”


This is a great question, and one I’ll answer with my 3-Step Client Acquisition Plan. Think of it as a guide, based on my 15 years of experience as a coach.


STEP #1: DETERMINE YOUR SPHERES OF INFLUENCE

This is huge because spheres of influence, or target markets, are the people who are most likely to want to work with you. A lot of times I see coaches try to be everything to everyone in an effort not to limit themselves or let business fall through the cracks.


I totally get that.


However, in so doing, they sometimes muddy the waters of who their ideal client is and how they can best help.


Here’s what I recommend for my clients: Identify three target markets of people you would like to coach, along with some specific benefits that group will receive as a result of working with you.


For example, a Business Coach might have the following markets:


Busy Entrepreneurs who are struggling to market themselves and get more business,

New Entrepreneurs (< 2 yrs) who are thinking about starting a business or who have recently started one, but have no idea how to get it off the ground right, and

Experienced Entrepreneurs (10+ yrs) who have a fully functioning business, but are looking to get out of the “day to day” and want to implement more systems so the company can run without them.

You see how we have three specific groups that cover a wide range of folks but still isn’t “everything to everyone?” Could this coach work with corporations or salespeople who have similar issues?


Maybe.


But considering the limited time, money and energy, those specific areas is where the coach is focusing their efforts, including when someone asks, “What’s a good referral for you?”


STEP #2: MARKET YOURSELF TO THOSE GROUPS

Sounds easy enough, but as we all know, “marketing” can be quite the task.


Here’s how I make it easy for my clients. First off, I tell them that there are three main client acquisition tools that they need to consider as a coach. Of those three, only two need to be implemented initially. Here’s a quick description:


Word of Mouth Marketing: This includes networking, referrals and building your practice through referral marketing.

Public Speaking: The process of generating clients through public speaking engagements or events.

Content Marketing: This includes blogging, publishing an online newsletter and posting content via social media.

So, the question becomes, which two marketing tools do you want to focus on and really execute well?


In my experience, that’s the major problem facing most coaches: In an effort to be everything to everyone, they try to market to “everyone,” and disperse their efforts to the point where they’re not able to achieve a meaningful result in their practice.


If you’re a real “people person” and like talking, then I’d recommend Word of Mouth and Public Speaking as your two client acquisition tools.


If you’re a little more introverted and are open to growing into meeting more people, then Content Marketing and Word of Mouth would be more your speed.


The important thing is to pick a couple and move forward!


STEP #3: DEVELOP AN ASSOCIATED MARKETING PLAN

If you’re a regular reader of the ICF Blog, you’ve already seen my 2017 Marketing Plan. I’m all about putting stuff down on paper.


Not only because it helps you stay on track, but also because when things get written down, they often elicit a higher level of commitment by that person.


For me, I have a Marketing Calendar that I use for all my marketing activities. It’s a “month-at-a-glance” calendar where I have planned and listed all my online articles, podcasts and social media content that’s going out that month.


If you want, you can put your speaking engagements and networking activities here as well (I’d recommend using a different color pen), that way you can have all of your “marketing” in one spot.


Regardless, this calendar becomes your Marketing Plan and something you execute against for the rest of the month.


THE BOTTOM LINE

Generating new coaching clients isn’t easy. When done from a place of integrity and confidence, you’ll find that working with more clients doesn’t have to be an overwhelming challenge.

HOW DOES BUSINESS ENTERPRISE INNOVATION MERGE WITH AGILITY?
Innovation results as a COLLISION between different perspectives and patterns, which break habitual ways of being, thinking and doing.

The result is an explosion of creativity that leads to innovative ideas and solutions!

Social media has become a vital part of every online marketing campaign. That is because, by being active on social media networks, you can easily listen to your customers and engage with them. The 2016 Social Media Marketing Report by Social Media Examiner showed that at least 90 percent of marketers wanted to know the best ways to use social media for greater audience engagement.

A great example of this is Oreo’s Super Bowl tweet. The power outage that occurred during the 2013 Super Bowl was the perfect opportunity for the company to advertise. They created an entertaining message that was retweeted thousands of times.


We can learn from the smart marketing tricks of the team behind Oreo’s Twitter account. Whenever there’s a trend you can relate to, tweet about it. You don’t have to be extra witty and unique; you just need to be relevant. Check this tweet by Mia Forbes Pirie, recommending her article “How to Avoid Arguments This Christmas.” The headline is smart because it’s unique, relevant to the trend of that time, and something her audience would read.


If you notice that “spring cleaning” is trending on Twitter, you can relate your tweets by using that hashtag and making the message relevant to both your business and the trend. For example, “Wanna know how #springcleaning helps you cleanse your mind? Read this article!” Of course, you’ll provide a link to that article, too.


ENGAGE YOUR AUDIENCE USING CONTESTS

Creating contests in order to engage with your audience can be very effective. One type of contest you can use is the “Best Answer Wins” challenge. For example, KFC created a contest where they offered a $20,000 prize to the student with the best tweet, using the #KFCScholar hashtag. Here’s the winning tweet.

BUSINESS SENSE: TAKING THE LEAP

How will you know when you are ready to step off the cliff, leave your regular job and take the leap of faith that it takes to run your own coaching business full time? Coaching can be an uncertain business. Leaving that regular paycheck in favor of becoming a coach-entrepreneur can be scary and daunting.


As someone who has been there, I invite you to consider some questions that you must honestly answer before you will know that you are ready to jump. As an entrepreneur myself, running my own consulting and coaching practice for the last 30 years, I still often take the time to go back and revisit these soul-searching questions.


HOW WILLING ARE YOU TO LIVE ON ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE?

Read “uncertain,” “irregular” and “unpredictable” into that question. You can mitigate this uncertainty by establishing monthly fees payable in advance, clients on retainer, comprehensive programs and other streams of income, such as products, webinars, etc. When you first become an entrepreneur, I highly recommend that you have a healthy savings account or line of credit on which to fall back. I also suggest that you carefully determine how many clients you would need and at what fee in order to meet your monthly financial obligations. Know what your risk level is as well as your budget!


WHAT ARE ALL YOUR POSSIBILITIES AND OPTIONS FOR TAKING THE FINANCIAL LEAP?

Is your day job compatible with the coaching services you can offer your clients? Do you have the option of working part time? I took the leap from employee to consultant many years ago. When I became a coach, I planned to transition from consulting to coaching right away but found the demand for consulting was too steady and predictable to give up completely. Gradually, coaching became the larger part of my business but consulting is still part of what I offer my clients. What are you doing now that you can add coaching to that would enable you to serve your clients’ needs?


WHAT IS YOUR MARKETING PLAN?

One of the challenges that any entrepreneur faces is where the customers are going to come from. To whom will your marketing be directed? The reality of coaching is that some clients will drop off. How are you going to cope with that? What’s the plan to mitigate attrition and keep your practice growing? I hate losing clients, but sometimes that’s just going to happen. As an entrepreneur, it is vital that you be prepared to lose a client or two and that you have a plan to build your practice back up.


HOW PREPARED ARE YOU TO WORK ALONE?

Being a full-time coach can be very isolating. No matter how delightful your home office is, coaching clients from it day after day can wear on you. Minimize the effects by grooming and dressing before you “go to work,” booking face–to-face appointments through your week, and engaging in outside learning, conference and classroom activities that enhance your coaching skills.


Becoming a coach-entrepreneur has so many rewards and benefits. The work is extremely fulfilling, and you can take pride in being your own boss and managing your own affairs. You can decide how many hours per day you want to work. Sometimes just working in slippers is enough reward! It takes hard work, risk and determination, but the payoff is immense. If you leap too soon, it won’t be fun. Be sure that you have considered all aspects of your financial needs, as well as a strategy for dealing some of the unexpected challenges. I can tell you from experience that once you have made that big step, you won’t look back!

HOW TO SELL A GROUP PROGRAM

When you want to increase your income as a coach, but you don’t have room in your schedule to take on more clients, you have two options: (1) raise your prices, or (2) offer a group program where you can work with a lot of clients all at once.

MERGING ICF,CY INTO ICF

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) is a WHO approved “derived” classification based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). In the interest of a streamlined, comprehensive ICF which adequately addresses all aspects of functioning across the lifespan, the relevant stakeholders have agreed to merge the two classifications back into one while completing other updates and revisions. This Resolution outlines that decision and provides additional detail about the process moving forward.
